Care.com offers tips on how to "go green" with our pets. Such as:

Buy biodegradable, compostable bags -- which helps protect the environment -- for the disposal of dog feces.

Purchase pet food that doesn't have chemical preservatives -- which will protect both your pets and the environment.

Adopt an animal from a shelter -- which will help combat overpopulation while driving "backyard breeders" and cruel puppy mills out of business. Check out such online services as www.Petfinder.com to begin your research.

4   Link   EWG: When Tested, Pets Show extremely High Levels of Toxic Chemicals
Environmental Working Group is concerned about toxic chemicals in your pets' food, water and environment which might threaten their health.

The site links to several PDF documents for more detailed information.

The following is a snippet from the site's home page:

"The impact on pet health

These classes of chemicals have been associated with cancer, reproductive and developmental risks, birth defects and thyroid problems in humans. Dogs show higher rates than humans of several kinds of cancer (including skin cancer, bone cancer, breast tumors and leukemia), and hyperthyroidism is a leading cause of illness in older cats.

Some people say it’s genetic changes causing these problems, but animals just don’t evolve quickly enough to account for the rise in illness we have seen. Scientists think exposure to toxic chemicals may be to blame. Our pets well may be serving as sentinels for our own health, as they breathe in, ingest or absorb the same chemicals that are in our environments."

Ponderings

"Keep away from people who try to belittle your ambitions.
Small people always do that, but the really great make you
feel that you, too, can become great."
Samuel Langhorne Clemens/Mark Twain (1835-1910)
