We searched the Internet for videos on Energy Audits for your home.. The value of an energy audit is that the inspector will bring equipment to test for issues that might not be visible by the naked eye such as electrical hot spots and safety hazards. These issues can lead to the loss of property and a safety hazard to yourself and your children.
Things that are not visible to the naked eye include moisture around an electrical system can create corrosion and rust on the electrical system, lack of insulation around a furnace, moisture leaks that can lead to mold, mildew, fungus, decay and termites.
We found several good videos on local news websites, more extensive videos on government websites, and a few on sites by home inspectors. The value of watching the short videos is that you will know the equipment the inspector brings along (blower door test and infrared camera scan), and what you can expect (Combustion Safety testing - for homes with gas appliances;
Building Walk through from basement =to the four corners of the attic, a survey of all the appliances and the lighting, and a conversation with you about how you are using your home.
The longer videos, are worth watching, if you are planning to have an Energy Audits as it will give you a better opportunity to talk to the inspector as well as to the person or company you might hire to make repairs. These videos are also worth watching if you are planning on buying real estate or upgrading your property.
Home Audits can be free (most local utility companies offer free energy audits) and can run several hundred dollars.
By having a professional assess the energy consumption of your home, you can determine the efficiency of your heating and cooling systems and receive other valuable conservation tips that over time pay for the cost of the audit.
